[edit] About
The world famous Alfies Antique Market is one of London's and Britain's largest indoor antique markets, located in Marylebone, City of Westminster. With over seventy-five dealers, it has become one of the most appealing and lively places for the trading of antiques, vintage and collectables. Alfies provides the four key criteria in an antiques hunt - an enjoyable search, genuine treasures, competitive prices and a vast selection. Pieces on offer range from Art Deco items, silver, furniture, jewellery, paintings, ceramics, glass to vintage clothing. From its location on Church Street, Alfies has helped to place Marylebone firmly on the map as one of the most important areas for antiques in London. Nearly all of the shops in the vicinity of Alfies have been refurbished and occupied by antique dealers, many of whom started their business in the market.
Opened by Bennie Gray in 1976 on the site of the Edwardian department store Jordan's, Alfies has undergone a careful and extensive rebuilding programme, including a four-storey extension in 1988. The market complex now covers 35,000 square feet over five floors, complete with an exotic waterfall staircase and the licensed Rooftop Restaurant. The latter provides a friendly and welcoming haven where to review the day's purchases or simply to observe the lively banter taking place amongst off-duty dealers.
Alfies boasts a diverse range of vintage and antique shops selling everything from English ceramics, mid-century design and 19th century furniture, to Art Deco glassware, 18th century watercolours, and African textiles. Each department brings together furniture, lighting, ceramics, glass, vintage fashion and jewellery from a truly international collection. As well as the shops, Alfies also offers a range of services including an upholstery workshop, antique frames and framing, watch and jewellery repair, and a vintage hair salon. Alfies is the first address for serious collectors as well as novice shoppers and is fast becoming a vintage institution in London. The dealers offer competitive prices and have an incredible wealth of knowledge between them. Buying something at Alfies not only entails the item but a little history lesson free of charge.
Alfies is constantly evolving, and with exciting developments all the time, it is no wonder that Alfies is firmly established as the place of choice for finding unique pieces of art and design, and an inspirational destination for designers and celebrities including Daniel Hopwood, Nina Campbell, Stella McCartney, Kelly Hoppen, Paloma Faith and Kate Moss.
