[edit] About
Sotheby's is the world's fourth oldest auction house in continuous operation. Founded in 1744 by Samuel Baker, it became not just one of the oldest fine art auctioneers in the world, but also now the largest. There are more than 100 Sotheby's offices around the world. Its present main office is located on the London's Bond Street.
New York office opened in 1955 and became pioneer in the developing North American market for Impressionist and Modern paintings. This position has been achieved through natural growth, acquisitions (most notably the 1964 purchase of the United States' largest auctioneer of fine art, Parke-Bernet), and management during the cyclical "art recessions" of the 20th century. Sotheby's New York headquarters is located on York Avenue, Upper East Side Manhattan. Completely refurbished in 2000, its premises expanded on ten floors and now host warehouse space, specialist departments, galleries, and the auction spaces. Sotheby's New York's offices also house Aulden Cellars (an in-house wine cellar).
